What is Structural Violence?

In today’s society and since the inception of capitalism, the examples of structural violence has increased every decade.

We often think that violence is a one-on-one event, but this isn’t always the case.

Johan Galtung first coined the term “structural violence,” back in 1969. His definition was a social structure or social institution that may harm people by preventing them from meeting their basic needs.

It will become clear to you if you read Peter Joseph’s book, that capitalism is responsible for structural violence.

There is study after study of the decline of our society in the war between the classes. What is a class?

A class is a different sector of people that divides them from other people. For example, people with money, vs. people without money and everything in between.

Examples of Structural Violence

We see this every day with the increase of depression and suicides because people can’t afford food or even a place to live. Or if they can pay for it, they have nothing left at the end of the day and they have to decide whether to pay for their mortgage or rent vs food or utilities.
Depression has increased along with the drugs the PHARMA MAFIA creates so they can make money off of low income or poor people, all the while using doctors to push these drugs to supposedly solve the problem.Suicides have risen not just in America, but worldwide.
In today’s society, you are only as free as the money you have to buy things. If you don’t have money, you are a slave to life, and whether people look at it this way or not, this is exactly why their mind and body is shutting down without them really understanding the root cause of why they feel bad.
The lower the income that people have, the more depressed they become. People think you are born with mental illness, but for the vast majority, the opposite is true. Society creates this mental illness by the VAST difference between people with money, and people without. Or people with status and without. This is an example of structural violence.
In America, people who have money live longer by about 13-14 years. In London, England, the gap is much wider, it’s a 25 year gap.
People who are not just financially poor, but their status in society is lower, has a 50% greater chance of contracting heart disease. See the study here.
More children of low-income families are physically, emotionally and sexually abused than any other classes of children. It talks about how due to the fact that both parents having to work outside the home, the increase of abuse towards children increases. That increases from the parents who are very stressed or depressed and full of anger, but also from others who take advantage of the fact that the children are left home alone.
More murders happen in America and other countries due to gang violence. It should be no surprise that gang violence is due to poverty.
More teen pregnancies happen in America to low-income teenagers.

All of these examples point to structural violence. You can’t ignore what is happening around you even if you are able to support yourself. If you do ignore these problems that cause us to have a society where violence breaks out every day, you are part of the problem, NOT part of the solution.

These studies and their results go as far back as the 1970’s and just keep getting worse and worse every year. A lot of these studies took place in 2010 and very recently in 2014, 2015, and so on.

We personally don’t need a study to see that more people are being abused, getting sick, or dying due to inequality both in society and in income. Just open your EYES and look around you. We are dealing with STRUCTURAL VIOLENCE.
